Porto

In the whole of Portugal you will find that there are regional names for the same type of coffee.  Here is a breakdown of how coffees tend to be referred to in Porto Santo.

Similar to the Italian espresso and is served in the same small espresso cup. Typically it is served half-full unless you specifically ask for a Bica cheia. It’s served without milk.  Normally about 30ml of coffee in a cup.

All this is is a bica but filled to the top with water.  It’s served without milk.  Normally about 60ml of coffee in a cup.

All this really is is a Bica (espresso) but just served in a slightly larger cup.  It could also be considered a ‘small black coffee’ when considering coffee servings in much of the western world.  Normally about 120ml of coffee.

This is a miniature cappacino served in an espresso cup – and without any cream or chocolate!  It is also made with frothy milk just like a cappacino and you might consider it a miniature cappacino.  Normally about 60ml of coffee.

A milky coffee served in a small coffee cup.  Possibly closest to the typical latte but normally only about 120ml of coffee.

Coffee similar to the Garoto but in a big glass with ¾ milk and without the espresso kick.  Most similar to the western latte but in a smaller cup. Traditionally a galão is made with a second passing of coffee from the machine and is weaker.  For an ever milkier version, you can ask for a “galão clarinho”.  Normally about 120ml of coffee.

There are a couple of places that make the western style cappuccino (although in a far smaller cup), however, the standard tends to be a “café au lait” topped with Chantilly and sweetened cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.  Normally about 120ml of coffee.

Either you want a traditional portuguese pastry or you want a slice of cake.  Both are available on the island but seldom at the same place.

There are cakes of a wide variety and often there will be different cakes to choose from each day.

For traditional Portuguese pastries, here is a list of most of them so that you can search them out:

It is difficult to find a venue on the island that doesn’t sell coffee.  If you are new to Porto Santo and a coffee lover, you may find the guide below helpful in understanding coffee on the island.

There are only 2 venues on the island that are dedicated to dancing.  However restaurants and bars often provide music.  See Events for more information.
