Travel

You don’t need to have a car on this island. Almost everything is on the south side of Porto Santo where the main 9-kilometer beach is. Taxis run up and down this strip or you can walk to and from a restaurant or a beach.

However, if you wanted to explore the true natural beauty of Porto Santo, some other form of transport is handy.  If you do want to explore some of the viewpoints, hikes, and other beaches away from the south, there are a few options for transport.

Bike hire

You can get most places by bike, but to explore the true nature you may want to invest in some electric power to get you up the many steep hills.

The following companies on the island offer a range of push-bikes, electric bikes, quad bikes and scooters:

E-bike Rental PXO

Delivery service

BikNic Porto Santo

R. José S.S. Moura Caldeira 1

Auto Acessórios Colombo Unip. Lda

Av. Henrique Vieira de Castro 64

Porto Santo Bikes

Estrada Regional 120, S/N – Cabeço

Car hire

If you’re a big group or you have mobility issues and you’d like the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want, a car may be best.

The electric Twizis are also great fun to explore the island.

A car can be hired through any of the following companies:

Moinho Rent-a-Car

Five Rent-a-Car

+351912009737

Porto Santo Bikes

Taxis

Other than getting from A to B, another practical and comfortable way to explore the island is by taxi. You can’t miss Porto Santo’s taxi rank in the town centre.  This is the same areas from where most buses depart as well. You can also call the taxi rank directly using the number below.

The phone number below is only manned by taxi drivers waiting at the taxi rank.  So it is worth having the direct number of at least one of the taxi drivers just in case none are waiting at the taxi rank.  If they are not available, they are normally quite good at finding an available taxi driver for you.

Public transport

There is a public transport network which serves both the population and visitors. The main bus station in Porto Santo is near the taxi rank in the centre of town. Among other routes, the bus makes daily trips to and from Porto Santo Port for those using the ferry service, and to Calheta, the opposite end of the island.

For an up-to-date timetable, phone the numbers provided on the timetable or visit the Moinho Rent-a-car shack at the bus station in the town centre.
